Tips for hiring independent care
Hiring a carer directly gives you control and flexibility, but it also means you are the employer. Use this short checklist to make sure nothing important is missed.
Request an up-to-date Enhanced DBS certificate
An enhanced DBS (or Access NI in Northern Ireland, or Garda Vetting in Ireland) shows whether a carer has any convictions, cautions or other information relevant to working with vulnerable people. Ask to see the original certificate and note the issue date.
Verify proof of identity, right to work, and references
Check a valid photo ID such as a passport or driving licence, confirm they are legally allowed to work in the UK, and contact at least two recent care references directly. A short phone call with a previous employer or family tells you far more than an email.
Check relevant qualifications and Public Liability Insurance
Ask about moving and handling, first aid, medication administration or other training relevant to your needs. Independent carers should also have public liability or care insurance — request a copy of the certificate and check the expiry date.
Agree on pay rates, hours, and expectations directly
Discuss hourly rates, evening or weekend premiums, mileage, cancellation notice and how you will handle holidays or sickness before care starts. Put the main points in writing so you both have a clear record.
Trust your instincts
Paperwork is important, but so is the way a carer communicates and treats the person needing care. If anything feels off, keep looking. You can also read our safeguarding policy for guidance on raising a concern.
